Small Diesel Outboard Motor: Why It Is So Hard to Find, and What to Buy Instead

The idea sounds perfect: one fuel for the yacht and the tender, long engine life, no petrol can in the cockpit locker. The reality is a short list, a heavy lift and a big invoice. Here is the straight story.

Simple definition

A small diesel outboard motor is a portable outboard that runs on diesel instead of petrol. They exist, but only a handful of makers build them, mostly for commercial, military or fuel-restricted use, and they are far heavier and pricier than petrol equivalents.

Callum and the single-fuel dream

Callum’s 9 metre (30 ft) keelboat had a diesel inboard, a diesel heater and a diesel cooker. The only thing aboard drinking petrol was the tender’s little outboard, and that meant a separate red can wedged in a locker that smelled like a service station every time he opened it.

So he went hunting for a small diesel outboard. Three evenings of searching turned up very few makers, long lead times and weights that made him laugh out loud. The motor he would need to lift over the pushpit rail from a rolling dinghy would weigh a lot more than he wanted to wrestle in a swell.

He sat on the idea for a week and then asked the real question: what did he actually want? Not diesel for its own sake. He wanted no petrol smell below and a tender motor he could lift one-handed. A Torqeedo Travel answered both. Motor and lithium battery come apart into two light pieces, the battery charges off the yacht’s house bank or the marina power, and the locker now smells of rope.

Buy the outcome, not the fuel type. Callum’s single-fuel dream turned into a zero-fuel tender.

Is a small diesel outboard motor worth buying?

For most leisure boaters, no. A small diesel outboard makes sense mainly where petrol is banned or impractical, such as some ships’ boats and commercial fleets. For a dinghy, tinnie or yacht tender, petrol four-strokes and electric win on weight, cost and parts.

Analyst tip: If fuel economy is why you searched for diesel, look at a modern EFI four-stroke. A 9.9 HP EFI trolling for hours sips surprisingly little, and you can buy it, service it and find parts almost anywhere boats are launched.

Why are small diesel outboards so rare?

Because diesel engines need heavy construction to handle high compression, which works against the one thing a small outboard must be: light enough to hang off a transom and lift by hand.

  • Weight: a diesel block and its starting system add kilos a small hull and your back do not want.
  • Cost: low production volume keeps prices high and parts specialist.
  • Starting: small diesels can be harder to pull-start than petrol motors of similar power.
  • Demand: leisure boaters overwhelmingly choose petrol four-strokes, so few makers bother.

We do not sell diesel outboards. We would rather point you to a motor you can live with for years than chase one that fights you every launch.

Small diesel outboard motor: FAQ

Do small diesel outboard motors exist?

Yes, but only a few makers build them, and they are aimed mostly at commercial, military and fuel-restricted users rather than leisure boaters.

Can I run my tender outboard on the same fuel as my yacht?

Only with a diesel outboard, which is heavy and costly. Many yacht owners go electric instead and charge the tender motor from the yacht’s batteries or shore power.

Is diesel more fuel efficient than a petrol 4-stroke outboard?

Diesel engines are efficient in general, but at small outboard sizes the savings rarely cover the much higher purchase price. A modern petrol four-stroke already uses little fuel at trolling and cruise.

Do you sell diesel outboards?

No. We sell petrol four-strokes from 2.3 to 30 HP and Torqeedo electric motors, which suit almost every small boat better.
