30 HP Outboard Motors: The Top of the Small-Motor Range
Thirty horsepower is the biggest motor we call small, and the one that makes a 16 to 18 ft boat feel properly quick. Here is every 30 HP we stock.
30 HP outboard motors are three-cylinder four-strokes, typically around 150 to 180 lb, that plane 15 to 18 ft fishing boats, skiffs and RIBs with three or four people aboard.
The Kowalski sisters’ crossing
Every August the three Kowalski sisters take their late dad’s 17-foot boat across the big lake to the family cabin. For years the old motor made the crossing a white-knuckle hour: three adults, luggage, groceries, and a chop that built every afternoon.
This year they fitted a 30 HP four-stroke. The boat climbed on plane with everyone aboard, stayed level through the chop, and made the crossing in twenty minutes. Magda, the eldest, said Dad would have approved. Then she said he would also have complained about the price, and all three agreed that was true.
Every 30 HP outboard motor we sell
Mercury, Suzuki and Honda build a 30 HP. Yamaha’s closest model in our range is the F25. Prices are starting prices in USD.
How do the 30 HP models compare?
All three true 30s use three cylinders. Differences come down to price, fuel system and feel at the tiller or helm.

30 HP outboard motors: FAQ
How fast will a 30 HP outboard go?
A 16 ft aluminum boat with two people typically runs around 28 to 35 mph. Heavier fiberglass hulls and full loads will be slower.
How much fuel does a 30 HP four-stroke burn?
Roughly 2.5 to 3 gallons per hour at full throttle, and far less at a moderate cruise. A 6 gallon portable tank or a built-in tank is typical.
Is a 30 HP outboard portable?
Not really. At around 150 to 180 lb it is usually bolted to the transom and removed only with a hoist or several people.
Should I choose a 25 or a 30 HP?
If your boat is rated for 30 HP and you carry three or more people, the 30 gives a better margin. If weight matters or your plate says 25 HP, choose a 25.
