Portable outboard motors are small outboards, typically 2.3 to 6 HP gas or compact electric, light enough (roughly 30 to 60 lb) for one person to carry and clamp onto a boat without tools.
The motor that lives in a hatchback
Sam doesn’t own a boat trailer. Sam owns a hatchback, a roof-rack canoe, and a folding inflatable that lives in the garage. Every weekend is a different lake, and whatever motor comes along has to fit beside the cooler and come out of the car without a hernia.
A 2.5 HP four-stroke did the job for two seasons. When Sam’s partner started joining the trips, they added a 4 HP for the inflatable. Both still fit in the back with room for the dog. Sam’s rule for portable motors: if you can’t carry it from the parking lot in one trip, it isn’t portable.

What is the lightest portable outboard?
Among gas motors, the Honda BF2.3 and Suzuki DF2.5, both around 30 lb. Torqeedo electrics split into separate motor and battery pieces for even lighter carrying.
Up to what HP is an outboard still portable?
Most people treat 6 HP, around 55 to 62 lb, as the practical limit for a one-person carry. From 8 HP up, motors usually stay on the boat.
Can I transport a portable outboard in my car?
Yes. Close the fuel vent and valve or drain the fuel, then lay it on the side the manual specifies or carry it upright. A motor bag protects your interior.
Gas or electric for a portable motor?
Gas gives longer range and fast refueling. Electric is silent, fume-free and allowed on electric-only waters, with range limited by battery charge.
