What should you confirm before you buy a small outboard online?
Confirm shaft length, start type, fuel setup and your boat’s HP limit. Get those four right and nothing else will trip you up.
- Shaft length. Measure the transom: about 38 cm (15 in) short, about 51 cm (20 in) long.
- Capacity plate. The motor must be at or below the maximum HP listed.
- Start and steering. Tiller with pull start suits most small boats; electric start needs a battery.
- Fuel setup. Integral tank or external tank and line; check what is included.
- First-run prep. Many motors ship without engine oil. Read the manual before the first start.
