How do you set up a small outboard motor boat for the season?
Pair it, fit it and test it before the first long trip. Five steps cover almost every small boat.
- Find the capacity plate. Note the maximum HP and total load (people, gear and motor). Stay under both.
- Measure transom height. Around 15 in (38 cm) calls for a short shaft; around 20 in (51 cm) calls for a long shaft.
- Clamp and secure. Tighten the transom clamps evenly and add a safety rope or chain from motor to boat.
- Do a dockside test. Start it tied up, check for a steady cooling-water stream, shift through gears at idle.
- Pack the basics. Life jackets for everyone, a paddle, a bailer and the kill-switch lanyard clipped to the driver. Check your local boating rules for anything else you must carry.
